the naming of a wolf

how do you wake a wolf?

You approach, careful to stay far enough away that he cannot snap at your heels. He know you are there – he has your scent and the length of your words to tell him where you are – but you are too far away to be more tempting than his dreams, and so he sleeps and dreams lazy wolf-dreams where he chases clever rabbits and sleeps under a moon large enough to shelter his hunger, and in the sleep of his wolf-dreams he dreams an older dream, one without moonlight or rabbits, or anything at all, really, except for those things which are best dreamt away from judging eyes.

But this isn't about that dream.

This is about the wolf, the fear keeps you from coming any closer, and the curiosity that ensures you do.
